As I sat down to reflect on the role of the watchman, I found myself deeply pondering the weight of this calling. The Scriptures are clear God has entrusted us as spiritual sentinels, responsible for guarding, guiding, and proclaiming His truth in a world that is ever-drifting from His ways.
In researching and writing this piece, I was reminded that the watchman's duty extends beyond merely sounding the alarm; it calls for unwavering faith, deep discemment, and a heart aligned with God's will. This role is not just for prophets and pastors but for every servant of God-we are all called to be vigilant, to stand in the gap, and to shepherd His people with wisdom and love.
The message within these pages is clear and pressing. As we prepare for the MMC in September 2025, may this discussion challenge us to embrace our divine responsibility with renewed purpose and conviction. Let us not only watch but also act, not only warn but also lead, and not only proclaim truth but also live it. May this be a season of sharpening and strengthening, that we may stand as faithful watchmen on the wall.
The Essence of the Watchman on the Wall.
As the Lord declared through the prophets, the watchman is more than a sentinel; he is a guardian of truth, a steward of righteousness, and a voice that cries out in the night. Ezekiel 33:1-7 reminds us that a watchman is accountable for warning the people, ensuring that none perish in ignorance. Isaiah 62:6 proclaims that watchmen should never be silent, continually interceding before the Lord until His will is established among His people.
The Watchman's Role in Today's World
Before a watchman can sound the alarm, he must first listen to the voice of God. A true watchman does not act on impulse, opinion, or emotion but delivers only what the Lord commands. This is a critical lesson for us today before we speak, preach, or warn, we must be deeply rooted in God's Word, receiving His truth into our hearts. Our responsibility is not just to see danger but to understand God's will and direction, discerning the times through His Spirit
Listening Before Speaking - The Watchman's First Duty (Ezekiel 3:10)
The Lord said to Ezekiel:
"Son of man, take into your heart all My words which I will speak to you and listen closely." - Ezekiel 3:10
We live in an era where spiritual, moral, and societal battles rage around us. Darkness seeks to silence truth, and compromise threatens the foundation of our faith. The watchman's responsibility today extends beyond ancient city walls-it is a calling to stand firm in faith amidst a world of deception, moral decay, and spiritual apathy.
- Guarding Against Falsehood and Compromise
In a time where truth is redefined to fit human desires, we, as watchmen, must stand for God's unchanging Word. The Apostle Paul warned that in the last days, people will gather teachers who "say what their itching ears want to hear" (2 Timothy 4:3-4). We must guard against false doctrines, ensuring that the Gospel remains pure and uncompromised in our churches, communities, and homes.
- Interceding for a Broken World
As the watchmen of old stood in prayer over their city, so too must we intercede for our families, our nations, and our generation. Jesus Himself withdrew often to pray (Luke 5:16), demonstrating that prayer is the fuel of our vigilance. Let us pray for revival, for wisdom in leadership, and for the lost to find salvation.
- Protecting the Next Generation
The enemy is actively targeting the hearts and minds of our youth through media, culture, and ungodly influences. As fathers, mentors, and leaders, we must train our children in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6). We must equip them with the Word, teach them discernment, and encourage them to stand boldly for Christ in a world that pressures them to conform.
- Living as Salt and Light (Matthew 5:13-16)
Jesus called us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. A watchman is not just a warning voice but a beacon of hope. We are called to reflect Christ in our workplaces, our communities, and even in the digital world. Our lives should demonstrate integrity, love, and unwavering faith, drawing others toward the kingdom of God.
- Courageously Speaking the Truth in Love
The world teaches tolerance of sin, but we are called to speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). This means standing against injustice, addressing sin with grace, and calling people to repentance-not with condemnation, but with the love of Christ. Many will reject the watchman's warning, but we are called to remain faithful, knowing that we answer ultimately to God.
The Call to Stand Firm
The Apostles, too, carried this responsibility, urging the early Church to "watch and be sober" (1 Thessalonians 5:6), to stand firm against the enemy (Ephesians 6:11), and to proclaim the Gospel with boldness and love. Paul charged Timothy to "preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and careful instruction" (2 Timothy 4:2).
We do not stand on these walls alone. God strengthens us, Christ intercedes for us, and the Holy Spirit empowers us. May we, as watchmen, be found faithful, unwavering, and steadfast in the task entrusted to us. Let us not only sound the alarm but also extend the hand of grace, leading others into the fullness of life in Christ. For the time is short, and the harvest is great may we stand at our posts with diligence and devotion.
